Green Collar Careers launch

October 16th, 2009

The Toronto Renewable Energy Cooperative (TREC), the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and 2degreesC are jointly hosting an exciting interactive youth forum on Green Jobs, the emerging Green Economy and the opportunities and implications for youth, on October 26 at Danforth Collegiate & Technical Institute. This event will kick-off the new Green Collar Careers co-operative education program, an experiential learning initiative offered by TREC and the TDSB, which seeks to address the labour needs of the emerging green industry by preparing today's youth for tomorrow's jobs.

Through an interactive discussion students will have the opportunity to ask questions and give opinions on the topics of green jobs, climate change and the building of a sustainable future. With the climate change crisis and the consequences and debt caused by the past recession, this generation of students will be inheriting a reality where the way we live, work and play are fundamentally changing. These situations have proven that old models of economy and career path just don't work in today's reality.  We need new perspectives, paradigms and inter-connective definitions on work, success, economy and environment. This will be a unique opportunity to combine experience and vision to map our way to a sustainable economy with a new green generation.

The event will feature guest speakers David Noble and award-winning journalist, social activist and political commentator Jeff Johnson.

Following discussion, students will be able to circulate through a mini-marketplace of youth action groups to immediately use the momentum, hope and enthusiasm generated from this event to make commitments to green living and explore their interests in joining the green workforce.
